Local History of Whitehorse, Victoria

Whitehorse is a local government area located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. It was named after the White Horse Inn, a hotel built in the early 1850s on the corner of Whitehorse and Station Roads in Box Hill.

The area that is now Whitehorse was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people. The first European settlers arrived in the mid-1830s and established farms and orchards in the area. The discovery of gold in the 1850s led to an influx of people, and the Box Hill area became a popular stopover for miners on their way to the goldfields.

In the late 1800s, the railway line between Melbourne and Lilydale was built, which brought more people and developement to the area. The Box Hill Station was opened in 1882, and the Box Hill Town Hall was built in 1897.

During the 20th century, the area continued to grow and develop as a residential suburb. The construction of new housing estates and shopping centres, such as the Box Hill Central Shopping Centre, transformed the area into a bustling suburb with a thriving retail and commercial sector.

Today, Whitehorse is a diverse and multicultural area with a population of over 165,000 people. It is home to a number of historic landmarks and cultural institutions, including:

  • The Box Hill Town Hall – a heritage-listed building that is a popular venue for weddings, exhibitions, and cultural events
  • The Box Hill Institute – a renowned educational institution that offers vocational and higher education courses in a range of fields
  • The Box Hill Hospital – a major public hospital that provides a range of healthcare services
  • The Box Hill Cemetery – a historic cemetery that contains the graves of many notable figures from the area's past
  • The Brickworks Market – a popular market that is held every Sunday in the historic Box Hill Brickworks site

Despite its urbanisation, Whitehorse still retains many natural landmarks and parks. The Box Hill Gardens, for example, is a picturesque park that offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is another popular destination, offering a serene lake and wetland habitat that is home to a variety of native birds and animals.

In conclusion, the history of Whitehorse is a testament to the area's resilience and adaptation to change. From its humble beginnings as a farming community to its current status as a thriving suburb with a rich cultural heritage, Whitehorse has undergone significant transformation while still holding onto its unique character and identity.
